First event – Wiridjil Young Farmers Disco (Jan 25 2011)

Chris Barks began his business and love for the arts back in 2011 to originally help fund his dream of becoming an airline pilot, a dream that was long held. A video about this dream can be found here. But when that dream was realized to not work out, he began pushing hard to build a production business with the aim of providing high-end entertainment products and solutions to the local entertainment industry.

The business started with a $1,000 investment for hobby/private use, with 2x 12′ speakers and a small format mixer to begin with. Lighting was then added to the setup, and after gaining some local interest and gigs, Chris began to finally get more equipment of higher quality.

His first wedding gig was held on 21 Feb 2015 in Colac, where the client (not known personally to Chris at the time) was warned and aware that it was the first wedding for the business. The event turned out to be a great success, and this was when the local wedding market realised Chris’ ability which started becoming his primary business income.

Corangamite Shire Battle Of The Bands (June 2016)

Fast forward years of growth and expansion, education and more events, Chris has now built a reputation locally providing sound systems, lighting and FX to many public and private events in South West and Western Victoria.

From 2017 to late 2019, Chris went to commence a Bachelor of Arts (Audio Production) at Collarts in Melbourne, but stopped approximately 3/4 way through the course as he began near full-time work in the industry. He travelled 3 times per week to the city to study whilst also living in Camperdown, running the business and performing other production work outside his business. In 2018, he was approached by the Colac Otway Performing Arts and Cultural Centre (COPACC) to begin part time technical work, which soon resulted in gaining a casual role of Acting Operations, Event Support and Technical Officer. This involved working on anything from Corporate events, Live Performances to other Theatre Shows.

In March 2021 (a year after the COVID19 pandemic hit), he was approached by ACE Radio to work as a full-time audio producer for Colac’s very own 106.3 Mixx FM and 1134 3CS. He is a weather announcer on both stations, voices commercials for the Colac stations and a few others around the network and currently has an on-air shift on MixxFM in Colac which can be heard between the hours of 4am to 6am Tuesday to Fridays. As for his role at COPACC, well that has now dropped back to part time.

Chris has also obtained his Avid Pro Tools 12 certification during his time at Collarts, has his Audinate Dante Level 3 Audio Networking certification, is also a HDBaseT Expert Installer and is also an active member of the Audiovisual Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA).

In that time, Chris Barks DJ has worked on events with some big names in the local and broader entertainment industries and gained a great portfolio of work. Some of his previous clients and events his previously worked on include;
